Lust A Prima Vista
So, everytime I listen to The Spill Canvas' One Fell Swoop, every song speaks to me, and most on a pretty deep level. The song writing on this and really all of their albums is so honest and emotional it's hard not to belt out every song along with Nick's brilliance. The album starts with this little tour de force and it hits especially hard, at least in my heart, so I thought I'd share.
"In one fell swoop it became clear to me,
that I despise you entirely,
but the good news is I'm gonna keep you around
And so your lust is just convenient now
Crack open a bottle of red
Let's toast to this here bed
Offer up your hand
My one night, two month, three year stand
And all at once it became clear to me,
that you're allergic to honesty
And you don't even have a friend around
And so my lust is just convenient now
Crack open a bottle of red
Let's toast to this here bed
Offer up your hand
My one night, two month, three year stand
I'm on my knees,
but so are you
Unfortunately for the wrong reasons
I keep incessantly believing that you're pure,
but you know it's not true
There's nothing wrong with being lonely
Crack open a bottle of red
Let's toast to this here bed
Offer up your hand
My one night, two month, three year stand
Crack open a bottle of red
Let's toast to this here bed
Offer up your hand
My one night, two month, three year stand"

music
Music is whatever you make it. If it's life, it's life. If it's love, it's love. If it's pain, it's pain. You can make it anything you want...just make it.

The Stranger
Came ridin’ into town with a couple of six shooters on his hip
Cold black stare as dark as night, long black duster blowin’ in the wind
Saloon doors went swingin’ as he kicked them in
Ponied up to the bar ordered himself a gin
The towns people had hoped they’d never see him again
‘cause they remember the last time they saw…
The Stranger
He finished his drink, finished his smoke, turned his eyes to the man on the keys
Ol’ Smitty stopped playin’ and just starting sayin’ Hail Marys down on his knees
Everyone hit the floor as the melody turned to shrieks
Before they knew it blood was the only thing wetting their beaks
Smitty lay under his piano crying crimson down his cheeks
They knew he wouldn’t be the last one snuffed by….
The Stranger
Headed down to the cat house, rented a room with a window facing to the street
Had a nice long soak, washed the blood from his clothes, took a load off his feet
He made his way back through the halls, wearing nothing but his boots
No one was safe, be they patron or whore, he stopped at every room
The Madam’s bright eyes, flashed little surprise, as she welcomed her impending doom
She was the only one who was ready for…
The Stranger
The final destination on his journey was also the most worthy as he hunted down Sheriff Sledge
Sauntered down to the jail house, game of cat and mouse, Deputy Douglas is now pieces ‘neath the hedge
Cuffed the sheriff to the cell door, he hung like Jesus on an iron grill
He started praying just like Smitty did, hoping for mercy from the one born to kill
The Stranger grinned, split Sledge stern to stem, one moment the sheriff was still
No one was left to bid the next town warning, I am….

the everlasting truth of Swingers
"And she's a sweet girl, and I love her to pieces, but fuck her, man. You gotta get on with your life. You gotta let go of the past."

the perfect drug?
"I don't feel the sickness yet, but it's in the post. That's for sure. I'm in the junkie limbo at the moment. Too ill to sleep. Too tired to stay awake, but the sickness is on its way. Sweat, chills, nausea. Pain and craving. A need like nothing else I've ever known will soon take hold of me. It's on its way."

Maybe
"I'm a lazy boy there's no doubt about it
Might take a miracle to get me started...
I'm a miracle there's no doubt about it
Might take a lazy girl to get me started."
Might take a miracle to get me started...
I'm a miracle there's no doubt about it
Might take a lazy girl to get me started."

Maximum Firepower
"This one's for the shoeshine boy
And the farmer in debt
Each string is barbed wire
Each chord is a threat
This blues guy I met
That never had a hit
Said you don't gotta be loud, son
To be heavy as shit"

Rawawawawawk!
Why do all the melodies that I come up with sound like either pop country or Gavin DeGraw? Not that sounding like Gavin would be that bad. I just don't know how to write to that.

Skeleton Key
She holds the key to my heart
But what does it matter
The door’s been wide open from the day we met
She holds it like a skeleton key
Cold and uninviting
But with curiosity for what lies beyond just the same
What’s worse, never knowing
Or knowing the one thing you fear the most is true
And will be
Forever
I hold the key ring to her heart
The door shut tightly, with bolts and chains
The right combination of keys opens bliss
So many keys
So little time
My hand is heavy
My arm is tired
The weight and the wait drag me down
Pull me closer to the floor
Closer to the fire
When I look in her eyes I see my reflection
I see no reflection
Through her eyes
I am nothing
But what does it matter
The door’s been wide open from the day we met
She holds it like a skeleton key
Cold and uninviting
But with curiosity for what lies beyond just the same
What’s worse, never knowing
Or knowing the one thing you fear the most is true
And will be
Forever
I hold the key ring to her heart
The door shut tightly, with bolts and chains
The right combination of keys opens bliss

Lemmings
It feels like someone took a vacuum and shoved it down my throat
It feels like someone is stepping on my chest
I can’t breath
I can’t sleep
I can’t scream
I can’t cry
I can’t see
I can’t live
Like lemmings crawling to their doom
I feel like my insides will leap over the edge of my tongue
And fall to their deaths
The race I’m running is long
There’s a finish line in sight
But the more I look at it the smaller I get
My heart drags behind me
Free to be stepped on
Ran over
Chewed up
But I’m so small I can’t lift it on my own
I need her
I need help
I need wings
It feels like someone is stepping on my chest
I can’t breath
I can’t sleep
I can’t scream
I can’t cry
I can’t see
I can’t live
Like lemmings crawling to their doom
I feel like my insides will leap over the edge of my tongue
And fall to their deaths
The race I’m running is long
There’s a finish line in sight
But the more I look at it the smaller I get
My heart drags behind me
Free to be stepped on
Ran over
Chewed up
But I’m so small I can’t lift it on my own

Fairy Tale
Somewhere inside her and I there are children
They rise to the surface when our eyes meet
She only wants to play when I’m around
Wide eyed curiosity fills her welcome soul
It takes only a word and she grips my hand
She can’t push herself on the swing
She can’t play paddy cake with the wall
She needs me to pull the wagon
To take her to the field of daisies
Only I know the way
We dance in the strawberry fields
Lay in the cool grass as the sky rushes overhead
My soul is her rest, my mind her solace
When she looks inside me she smiles
The book of my heart is open to her favorite fairy tale
She dare not stay too long
For the sun will always set and the snow will always fall
All too soon it’s cold and black
All too soon the clouds will bring the rain of her tears
They rise to the surface when our eyes meet
She only wants to play when I’m around
Wide eyed curiosity fills her welcome soul
It takes only a word and she grips my hand
She can’t push herself on the swing
She can’t play paddy cake with the wall

5 minutes
The longest day of my life is a total of five minutes
Every meaningless story
All the meaningless chatter
Every tear
Every “I’m sorry”
Every “I love you”
Every second looking in your eyes
Every shudder
Every breath
Every unreturned feeling of longing
All for what
A total of five minutes
Me telling you “I love you”
You telling me “I can’t”
Me asking “why”
You answering “I don’t know”
Me telling you “it’s ok”
You believing it’s true
Both of us knowing it’s not
You knowing it definitely is NOT
It’s all right, ‘cause it’s all wrong
Every meaningless story
All the meaningless chatter
Every tear
Every “I’m sorry”
Every “I love you”
Every second looking in your eyes
Every shudder
Every breath
Every unreturned feeling of longing
All for what
A total of five minutes
Me telling you “I love you”
You telling me “I can’t”
Me asking “why”
You answering “I don’t know”
Me telling you “it’s ok”
You believing it’s true
Both of us knowing it’s not
You knowing it definitely is NOT
It’s all right, ‘cause it’s all wrong
